Joss Powder Grades Explained: 3 Cups to 36 Cups
Vietnam joss powder (also called jigat powder or maida lakdi powder) is made from the bark and leaves of the Litsea glutinosa tree. Grades are measured in “cups”, from 3 cups up to 36 cups. The higher the cup number, the more bark and the less leaf in the powder, and the stronger the binding (viscosity).
- 36 cups joss powder – pure red bark, highest viscosity, for premium agarbatti and smooth, crack-free sticks.
- 24 cups joss powder – mostly bark, strong binding at a lower cost, good for regular masala and raw agarbatti.
- 16 cups and below – bark and leaf blend, low viscosity, used where cost matters most, such as black premix and mosquito coil.
Red Bark vs Green Bark Joss Powder
Red bark joss powder comes from the inner bark and gives the highest viscosity and lightest colour. Green bark and bark-and-leaf powders are darker and bind less, but cost less per kg. Choosing the right grade for your formula lowers wastage and saves money.

Is joss powder the same as jigat powder?
Yes. Joss powder, jigat powder, jiggat powder and maida lakdi powder are different names for the same Litsea glutinosa bark powder used as a binder in agarbatti.
Which grade is best for agarbatti?
For premium sticks, 36 cups red bark joss powder gives the best binding. For regular production, 24 cups gives a good balance of binding and cost.
