Joss powder is one of the most essential raw materials used in the agarbatti (incense sticks), dhoop sticks, and mosquito coil industry in India. It is made from Litsea glutinosa bark and works as a natural binding agent.
Joss Powder Market in India
India is one of the largest producers and consumers of agarbatti. However, the supply of high-quality joss powder in India is still unorganized and dependent on traders and importers.
Most manufacturers face challenges such as:
- Inconsistent quality
- High prices due to middlemen
- Irregular supply
Our Advantage – Direct Vietnam Sourcing
We manufacture joss powder at our own factory in Vietnam, from Litsea (bời lời) bark, and supply it across India. This helps us:
- Reduce cost by 20–30%
- Maintain consistent quality
- Ensure bulk and continuous supply
Bulk Supply Across India
We are connected with agarbatti manufacturers across India and supply joss powder in bulk quantities.
Whether you are a manufacturer, trader, or exporter, we can provide reliable supply at competitive prices.
Why Choose Us?
- Direct sourcing (Vietnam)
- Strong industry network (since 2016)
- Bulk supply capability
- Long-term partnership
Agarbatti Raw Material List
Agarbatti, also sold as incense sticks or joss sticks, are made from a short list of raw materials. A thin bamboo stick is coated with a paste of wood powder, charcoal and a binder. The stick is then dried and perfumed. A case study on incense stick burning from Jain University notes that this basic make-up is almost the same across brands. Fragrance is only a very small part of the mix.
| Raw material | What it does in the stick | What to know when buying |
|---|---|---|
| Bamboo sticks | The core of the agarbatti. The paste covers three-quarters or more of the stick. The bare end is the handle. | Assam and Tripura are major Indian sources. India moved raw agarbatti imports to the restricted category in August 2019 and raised the import duty on round bamboo sticks to a uniform 25% in June 2020. Check current DGFT and customs rules before you import. |
| Charcoal powder | Helps the stick burn evenly. Many makers use it in fairly large amounts. | Made by burning wood. A government release on a bamboo stick unit in Assam notes that the unit also uses its burnt waste bamboo to make charcoal powder for agarbatti. |
| Wood powder, sawdust or white chips | Adds body to the paste. | Sawdust is simply unburned wood powder. Some hardwood sawdust, such as Machilus, is highly absorbent and holds fragrance well. Masala formulas often add aromatic wood powders, especially sandalwood. |
| Jigat (joss) powder | The binder. It is a natural, water-soluble adhesive. With water, it turns the dry powders into a sticky dough that holds on the bamboo stick. | Made from Litsea glutinosa bark. Lower cup grades also contain leaf. The grade decides binding strength. See our agarbatti binder powder range. Comparing binders? Read joss powder vs guar gum and joss powder vs makko. |
| Masala ingredients | Herbs, resins, spices and aromatic woods give masala sticks their own scent. | Common examples are sandalwood, agarwood, patchouli, vetiver, star anise and cloves. Recipes differ from brand to brand. |
| Perfume compound | Gives the finished stick its fragrance. Dry raw sticks are dipped in or sprayed with perfume. | Ask your supplier to confirm in writing that the compound has none of the substances banned under IS 19412:2025 (see below). |
| DEP or white oil | Dilutes the concentrated perfume before dipping. | A DC-MSME project profile describes diluting perfume with white oil or diethyl phthalate (DEP). DEP product listings also name agarbatti and fragrance solvent among its uses. |
| Water | Turns the dry mix into a workable dough. | Add it slowly and knead until the dough is firm, smooth and even. |
| Packing material | Protects the perfumed sticks. | Dipped sticks are packed right away in butter paper or polypropylene bags, then in printed cartons. |
How these raw materials become agarbatti
- Mix: Charcoal, wood powder and jigat are mixed dry. Water is added slowly and the mass is kneaded into a dough.
- Roll or extrude: For hand-rolled agarbatti, workers roll the dough onto bamboo sticks on wooden boards. For machine-made agarbatti, the dough goes into the hopper of an automatic machine, which coats the sticks.
- Dry: The coated sticks are dried. At this stage they are called raw agarbatti.
- Dip and pack: Raw sticks are dipped in diluted perfume and packed straight away.
Indian standard for agarbatti: IS 19412:2025
In December 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) released IS 19412:2025, a dedicated Indian Standard for incense sticks (agarbatti). It groups agarbatti into machine-made, hand-made and traditional masala types. It sets requirements for raw materials, burning quality, fragrance performance and chemical parameters. It also lists banned substances. These include insecticides such as allethrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fipronil, and fragrance intermediates such as benzyl cyanide, ethyl acrylate and diphenylamine. Products that meet the standard are eligible to carry the BIS Standard Mark. Ask your perfume and chemical suppliers to confirm compliance in writing.
Matching Jigat Powder to Your Agarbatti Type
When you choose joss powder for agarbatti making, start with how you make your sticks and who you sell to. On the cup scale, a higher cup grade has more bark and binds more strongly. A lower cup grade has more leaf and costs less. Our joss powder grades guide gives the cup grade for each use. The table below covers what the binder has to do in each type of stick.
| Agarbatti type | What the binder must do | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Premium and hand-rolled masala agarbatti | Hold a heavy masala on the stick. Roll smooth and dry without cracks. | Ask about our Premium grade, which is made for premium agarbatti. |
| Regular raw agarbatti for dipping | Bind the same way batch after batch, at a cost that suits large volumes. | Ask about our Standard grade, which is meant for cost-effective bulk production. |
| Machine-made agarbatti | Give a dough with the same feel every time, so it feeds and coats evenly on the machine. | Run a trial of each grade on your own machine. Once a grade runs well, stay with it to keep batches even. |
| Black premix | Bind a charcoal and wood powder mix at a price that works for a ready-mix product. | Lower cup grades are used where cost matters most. See the premix section below. |
| Dhoop sticks and cones | Hold the full shape on its own, as dhoop has no bamboo core. | Check for cracks and breakage after drying before you settle on a grade. |

Joss Powder for Agarbatti Premix Makers
On B2B marketplaces, products listed as “agarbatti powder” include ready premix, also called agarbatti premix powder. Black premix is made mainly of charcoal powder and wood powder, with a binder blended in. White premix is also sold. Some listings name joss or jigit as the binder. At least one premix uses guar gum instead.
Black premix joss based powder: where our jigat fits
Premix listings that give their binder type as “joss based” or “jigit based” use the kind of binder we make. Our product is joss powder, which premix makers blend into their own mix.
- You make the premix. Blend our jigat with your own charcoal and wood powder, in your own ratio.
- You choose the grade. Match the grade to your price point and to your buyers, whether they hand-roll or run machines.
- You test before you scale. Make a small trial batch. Check that the dough holds on the stick, dries without cracks and burns evenly.
