Why do Indian agarbatti makers buy imported joss powder?
Domestic supply of the bark is limited. A Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) project note reports a serious raw material shortage for jiggat, the agarbatti binder, and links it to unsustainable harvesting and a lack of cultivation. In a 2023 Sugandh India interview, an agarbatti raw material supplier said joss powder was once sourced from Odisha and Meghalaya but now has to be imported after a government ban.
