Vietnam joss powder (jigat powder) is sold in grades called cups, from 3 cups up to 36 cups. The cup number tells you how much bark is in the powder and how strongly it binds. Choosing the right grade cuts wastage and cost in agarbatti production.
What Does “Cups” Mean in Joss Powder?
The cup grade is a trade measure of viscosity, or binding strength. More red bark and less leaf gives a higher cup number and stronger binding. Less bark and more leaf gives a lower cup number, darker colour and a lower price per kg.
Joss Powder Grade Guide
- 36 cups joss powder – pure red bark, highest viscosity, lightest colour. Best for premium agarbatti and smooth, crack-free sticks.
- 24 cups joss powder – mostly bark, strong binding at a lower cost. Good for regular raw and masala agarbatti.
- 16 cups joss powder – bark and leaf blend, medium to low viscosity. Used in black premix and cost-sensitive production.
- 3 to 12 cups – mostly leaf, low viscosity, lowest price. Used where binding needs are small and price matters most.
Red Bark vs Green Bark Joss Powder
Red bark joss powder comes from the inner bark and gives the highest viscosity. Green bark powder binds less and is darker. Many grades are a blend of red bark, green bark and leaf, and the blend decides the cup number.
High Viscosity vs Low Viscosity Joss Powder
High viscosity joss powder lets you use less binder per batch and gives stronger sticks. Low viscosity joss powder costs less per kg but you need more of it. Compare the cost per batch, not only the price per kg.
Which Grade Should You Buy?
- Premium and export agarbatti: 36 cups
- Regular masala and raw agarbatti: 24 cups
- Black premix and budget production: 16 cups
- Mosquito coil: usually 16 cups and below, depending on your formula; test a sample first
Specifications such as viscosity, mesh and moisture can differ between suppliers for the same cup grade. Always ask for a sample and test it in your own formula before a bulk order.
