Mosquito coil makers also use joss powder as a binder. Joss powder (jigat powder, made from Litsea glutinosa bark) is the binder that holds the coil mix together, lets it be pressed into thin spirals, and keeps the dried coil in one piece.
Why Mosquito Coils Need a Binder
A mosquito coil is a mix of wood powder, filler, the active ingredient and a binder. Without a good mosquito coil binder powder, coils crack when punched, break during packing, or burn unevenly. Joss powder gives the dough the stickiness and strength it needs.
Benefits of Joss Powder in Mosquito Coils
- Binding that holds the coil shape through punching and drying
- Natural plant-based binder
Which Joss Powder Grade for Mosquito Coils?
For mosquito coils, the usual choice is 16 cups and below, depending on your formula; test a sample first. If coils crack, a higher viscosity grade or a slightly higher binder percentage may help, so test it in a small batch. See our joss powder grades guide.

How Joss Powder Works in Mosquito Coil Dough
One mosquito coil patent (US 4,144,318) sets out the basic process. The dry ingredients are mixed with water into a putty-like mass. This is extruded into a ribbon or sheet, the coils are stamped out, and then they are dried. In that patent, the part that burns is a carrier such as sawdust or coconut shell flour, the binder is potato starch, and a burning aid or dye can be added along with the insecticide.
The binder holds the sheet together so it can be stamped, and keeps the dried coil in one piece. Joss powder (jigat) is used for this job. The Bamboo Technical Support Group at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) describes jigat as a binding material for making incense sticks and mosquito repellent coils, because of its strong viscosity and adhesive properties.
The stickiness comes from mucilage in the bark. A 2010 study in Pharmacognosy Research (Mishra, Kumar and Talukdar) reported that Litsea glutinosa bark mucilage swells in cold water and quickly dissolves in warm water, forming a viscous colloidal solution. This helps explain why the powder turns sticky once water is added in the mixer.
Binder dose depends on your filler
There is no single correct dose. In US 4,144,318, coarser sawdust needed more binder than finer sawdust. That patent used potato starch, not joss powder, so treat this as a direction to test, not a dose. The same patent also says to avoid excess water, because the water must be removed during drying. Test your own filler and grade together.
Other coil binders
Joss powder is not the only option. Coil patents also name starches (potato, tapioca, corn), gums such as guar and xanthan, and PVA glue as binders. They are not simple swaps: the starch patent above says other starches could not replace potato starch in its method. For a side-by-side look, read our joss powder vs guar gum comparison.
Troubleshooting Mosquito Coils: Binder Checks
Start at the dough. Before you change anything, write down your current grade, binder percentage, water and filler. Change one thing at a time and test a small batch.
- Coils crack while drying. Check water before you change the binder. Extra water has to leave in the dryer, so a wetter dough has more to lose. Note your dryer settings with each test so you can tell dough problems from dryer problems. If water and drying look right, test a slightly higher binder percentage or a stronger grade in a small batch.
- Coils break at punching. If the sheet tears or the coil edges crumble when stamped, look at the binder percentage first, then the grade. A coarse filler may need more binder than a fine one. Make sure the dough is mixed evenly so no part of the sheet is short of binder.
- Coils break when separating or packing. Dried coils are brittle. One coil patent (US 2005/0249766) notes that care is needed when separating each coil to avoid breakage. Breakage matters because a broken coil burns for a much shorter time. If breakage is high at this stage, the dried coil may need more strength, so review binder percentage and grade as above.
- Uneven burn. Check mixing first. The binder and active ingredient should be spread evenly through the dough. If the problem started after a binder or grade change, go back to the last setting that burned well and adjust in smaller steps. Burn-test every change, not only strength.

We offer a Premium grade and a Standard grade. See both on the joss powder product page. When you contact us about coil binder powder, tell us:
- the binder and grade you use now
- your filler, for example sawdust or coconut shell flour
- the problem you want to fix: cracking, breakage or uneven burn
We will send current price and specs for the grade you want to test. Reach us through the contact page, by phone or on WhatsApp. If you also make agarbatti, see our agarbatti raw material guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does joss powder do in a mosquito coil?
It works as the binder. Mucilage in Litsea glutinosa bark forms a viscous solution with water, which holds the sawdust and other ingredients together. This lets the dough be formed into a sheet, stamped into coils and dried in one piece.
Which joss powder grade should I use for mosquito coils?
There is no single grade for every coil line. The right grade depends on your filler, binder percentage and machine. See our joss powder grades guide, then test a sample in your own dough before a bulk order.
Why do my mosquito coils break at punching?
Check the binder percentage first, then the grade. A coarse filler may need more binder than a fine one, and uneven mixing can leave weak spots in the sheet. Change one thing at a time and test a small batch.
Can guar gum or starch replace joss powder in coils?
Coil patents name starches, gums such as guar, and PVA glue as possible binders. They are not simple swaps, so any change needs testing on your own line. Our joss powder vs guar gum guide compares the two.
